Vedantic wisdom in succinct clarity:
The Self is Chit for it shines by itself unaided by any other light and illumines the whole universe by its own light. It may be asked how can we, ignorant as we are, be said to illumine the whole universe. But the answer is plain that the outside universe however big and varied it may be is after all only inert matter and cannot be the object of our perception unless we throw upon it the flood of our consciousness-light; it can never know us. Similarly the entire inside world consisting of the various Koshas, feelings, thoughts etc., within us is also inert and cannot be the object of our perception unless we turn upon it our consciousness; it can never know us. Even the mind which seems to know everything cannot know the Self for it is after all only an inert product of matter subject to various limitations and changes. The Sruti that the Atma has to be seen only by the mind must not be taken literally. Gold glitters when molten by fire. This does not mean that fire imparts or creates the glitter in the gold but only that when by fire the impediments to glittering are removed the gold glitters by virtue of its own nature. Similarly, when the purified mind dispels Ajnana, the Self shines in its native glory. Even then the dispelling power of the mind does not inhere in the inert mind but is borrowed from the Self. We say that a lamp dissipates darkness but the mere lamp-vessel, the oil or the wick therein have no power in themselves to destroy darkness; nor can the ever-present unlimited Agni do it. It is the combination of these all that has got that power. The whole combination is called a light and is conceived of as destroying darkness. Similarly in the body-lamp filled with the oil of Karma, the fire of Atma igniting the wick called mind gets the name of Jiva and dispels darkness but that power is really only in the Atma and not in the others. - Sri R Krishnaswamy Iyer
