The Law of Karma

"A man will not die before his time has come, even though he has been pierced by a hundred arrows; he will not live after his time is out, even though he has been only touched by a blade of grass." says a scripture.

If so does not the law of karma fill us with despair that we cannot avert what is sure to come?

But we do not know what is going to come to pass. Therein lies our incentive to work. We have to discharge our duty and leave the result to God. If every one could interfere with the events of the world at his/her own will and pleasure, what a chaotic world it would be!

The law of karma, far from filling us with despair, fills us with hope. It teaches us that, in the moral world as well as in the material world, nothing happens by chance. Understanding Karma is like a tribal fearing storms & eclipses, attributing it to the anger of gods until they learn about the laws of weather or nature. Similarly, knowing karma dispels fear of random accidents and luck. In a lawless universe, our efforts would be futile. But in the realm of law, we feel secure and guide ourselves with the help of our knowledge. When we know that adharma entails suffering, that we shall reap as we sow, and that our entire future will not be decided by what we do or fail to do in a single lifetime, but that we shall be given as many chances to improve ourselves as we want, we are filled with hope. When we know that we are the architects of our own fortunes and that it is never too late to mend, we feel strong and secure.
