If we earn well and acquire all material comforts, we will be fine from a worldly point of view. When people say that someone is doing very well, they mean it from their perspective, based on what they are able to see (‘loka drṣṭyā’). However, worldly accomplishment does not necessarily result in one’s upliftment or fulfilment in the real sense. This does not lead to ātmoddhāra. One can achieve true fulfilment in life only through the accumulation of merit (puṇya).

In essence, the message is that virtuous deeds (puṇya kārya) done in the past, protect us from all kinds of difficulties – when one is lost in a forest, in the midst of a battle, among enemies, in the middle of the sea, on top of a mountain, and when one is asleep, helpless and in a difficult situation.

Hence, if we earn well and lead a comfortable material life, we will be fine temporarily. Material security brings temporary comfort, but true fulfilment (sārthaka) comes from building our spiritual wealth. Earning merit (punya) is the key, and this is best achieved through devotion to God (bhagavad ārādhané) and selfless service (paropakāra). – From An Anugraha Bhashanam at Tarikere 2024
