Once when asked about the necessity of karma, Jagadguru Sri Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji explained that it is needed for the cleansing of the mind. Though the real happiness lies within us, we are not aware of it because of ignorance. This ignorance does not allow us to escape the attractions of worldly pleasures. Just as we de-weed, apply manure, water, and then sow seeds in the field, we must also continuously observe the growth of the plants to ensure a good harvest. Similarly, we should de-weed our minds of adharma or wrong behavior, apply dharma or righteousness as manure, and continuously and carefully observe our behavior to cleanse the mind. Then, the mind becomes worthy and potent to realize real happiness. Karma alone is the agent that can aid us in this process of cleansing.
