The Jagadguru, as we know, always wanted to immerse Himself in tapas. This desire became increasingly intense after His return to Sringeri from the second tour. He felt that He should do tapas in a secluded place free from public disturbance. He set up a hermitage on the southern banks of the Tunga River, carving out a space amidst the woods. In early 1898, the Guru shifted to the hermitage with Sri Chandramouleeshwara's and Sri Sharadamba's idols. He performed elaborate worship to the deities. In the evening He sent the idol of Sri Sharadamba back to the Math and decided to stay in the hermitage permanently. A few attendants were allowed to stay there and serve Him. They were placed in separate hermitages. This area was named Narasimha Vana, after his Guru. He would spend hours meditating under the shade of trees and would eat sparingly once a day. He would visit the Math only on Fridays for the darshana of Si Shararadamba.

Meanwhile, Dewan Seshadri Iyer wrote to the agent of the Math that the Prince Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV would be visiting Sringeri to seek the blessings of the Jagadguru, before formally assuming the Kingship of the state of Mysuru. This information was conveyed to the Jagadguru by the agent. Acharyal told him to make appropriate arrangements to receive the Prince and his entourage. He did not wish to stir out of Narasimha vana.

The Prince along with his brother, Dewan and tutor Mr. F.M.Fraser arrived in December 1898 and after darshana of Sri Sharadamba, crossed the river and had the darshana of Guru in Narasimha Vana. The next day, the Prince performed Padapuja and offered Bhiksha to the Mahaswamiji after which he was with Prasada.

Mr.Fraser who had the darshana of the Acharyal for the first time, was attracted by His grace, simplicity, radiance and charisma. The next evening, he had a four-hour long conversation with the Jagadguru. He expressed his gratitude by saying "We entertain our guests with snacks and drinks. But your Holiness dispenses blessings and tranquility." The Prince and his entourage left Sringeri after obtaining Phalamantraakshata from Acharyal. - From the book 'The Guru' by Sri La Na Shastry published by Navabharathi Prakashana, Mysuru.
