Jagadguru was a person of steady wisdom. For His Holiness there was no need to engage in any particular act. Worship when properly done leads to the purification of the mind making firm self-enquiry possible. The Mahaswami's mind was ever pure, ever revelling in the fullness of consciousness. Hence there really was no need for HH to adhere to the various schedules of daily and periodic worship which the heads of the Peetha are required to do. Once HH told Jagadguru Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Mahaswami, You have all labelled me a big pontiff. Regardless of whether or not should perform worship and obtain the fruit thereof, if I were to refrain from worship, what would people say? 'Even the Mahaswami does not perform any worship. Yet he repeatedly tells us to worship. Why should we do what he himself is not interested in doing?' Therefore whether it is necessary or unnecessary for me I must perform worship. If I do, the people would start thinking. "The great one himself is performing poojas. It may or may not be necessary for him but we need it. So we must do it". The necessity for and the importance of setting the proper example was stressed by the Mahaswami in this conversation. To the Mahaswami, worship was a means of direct communion with God. It was not a formality to be gone through mechanically. HH would emphasise that it should be done with total absorption.
