Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji

Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji: Man does not desire sorrow, difficulties, or adversity. Yet, he commits sinful deeds that inevitably lead him to such sorrows. He engages in these actions not out of ignorance or innocence but with full awareness. We can say "We do not know why he behaves like that But we cannot say that there is no reason".

There is a reason. Arjuna asks Bhagawan in the Gita:

अथ केन प्रयुक्तोऽयं पापं चरति पूरुषः . . .

"Oh Lord ! I have a big doubt. Men commit sins with full Knowledge. But when you observe them, it appears as if there is a powerful force behind them, driving them, compelling them, to commit those sinful deeds. What is that force?"

Bhagawan replied:- काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः. . .

"It is desire, it is wrath, born of the Guna of Rajas; it is a great devourer, an impeller to sin. Know this to be the foe here."

काम desire; क्रोध = hatred / anger. These are the two driving forces which lead man to commit sinful deeds. These are his two sworn enemies. These enemies are sitting right within his mind only: nowhere else विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् Who is our enemy? one who seeks to harm us, who wants to cause distress to us. This काम and क्रोध are doing enormous damage and causing sorrow to us. It is this pair which drives us mad to commit all the sins. Who so ever is committing sin-you will find that he is doing it because he is possessed by one of these qualities काम or क्रोध (lust or hatred ). One who has conquered these two, overcomes these two, will never commit sin. These two perch themselves very comfortably in the mind and lead people to doom.
