Renouncing the possessions or ownership of the possessions is Sannyasa. But the true spirit of Sannyasa, renunciation, is complete only when the possessor is also renounced. That is, the jiva bhaava comprising of latent swamitva, bhoktrutva, is also to be given up by realizing that one is Brahman which is the substratum of everything and everyone in creation. Then alone arises true peace. Great kings have renounced everything to experience this peace.

This is demonstrated in the Trivikrama Avatara when by the first two steps the entire possessions of Bali was taken away and by the third step, the very 'person', the possessor, in Bali was erased.
