When we try to do any good deed, our experience is that we encounter many problems and obstacles. All the more so, when we are in the process of doing something noble, like an act of service to God or to one’s Guru, or when we try to lend a helping hand to others. However, we should boldly face and overcome the challenges, and continue our efforts with full determination. The obstacles are just a form of test administered by the Divine, to check if we are prepared to make the full journey.

If we are to decide whether a good student is competent enough to be awarded the degree, we have to first subject him to a thorough examination in the chosen discipline. We have to inevitably ask him numerous questions, successively one after another, each one progressively more difficult than the previous one. Only when he answers all of them successfully, do we consider him worthy of being considered a scholar in the subject.

The main objective of asking him a series of questions, with increasing levels of difficulty, is not to trouble him, though he may in fact be actually troubled by the same. The real objective is to ensure that he becomes a complete and accomplished scholar. And the student too has to put in a lot of effort and go through many difficulties, and make necessary sacrifices to be able to get through the examination. In contrast, there is no point in asking questions at all to a student who is lazy and does not study. He will anyway not get through. On the other hand, for someone who wants to succeed in becoming a scholar or expert, it is absolutely essential to face all possible questions and respond to them successfully. courtesy ahambrahmaasmi. org

Serving the Divine, serving one’s Guru (who is God personified) and doing good to others are the three noble deeds of the highest order. When we try to do any of these, it is inescapable that we face difficulties and overcome them. Just as a difficult examination is absolutely essential for a student to turn into a scholar, it is necessary to face difficulties with tenacity and successfully overcome them, when performing the three noble deeds, which are most essential for the fulfilment of one’s life. – From the Anugraha Bhashanam delivered during the 74th Vardhanti celebrations at Sringeri.

Footnote: On this auspicious Rama Navami, let’s reflect on Bhagawan Rama’s unwavering determination. His life exemplifies overcoming obstacles in service to Dharma. As we celebrate his birth, always remember Sri Sannidhanam’s words above: Difficulties are tests, not roadblocks. Face them with courage and dedication, just like Rama did, in pursuit of any noble deed
